Oxford School of Gymnastics secured two gold medals and a silver on a successful trip to Italy.

Rebecca Brookes and Sophie Newell led throughout their qualifying rounds and finished with a flourish to win the junior women’s pairs event ahead of an American team.

Oxford also bagged junior women’s group gold through Gabrielle and Cosette Jackson and Nina Ferber, who climbed from third to first to beat the favourites from Kazakhstan.

More than 220 gymnasts from 11 countries took part in the event, which also saw Becky Evans, Sophie Everett and Siobhan Mahdoo claim silver in the senior women’s group category.

Despite having had their training disrupted by an ankle injury to Mahdoo, the Oxford trio pipped their Italian rivals for second in the final routine.

Abi Woodliffe-Thomas, Eve Pilley and Lucy Kavanagh were pipped for bronze in the 11-16-year-old girls’ group category, which saw fellow Oxford teams Emily Allen, Freya Clempson and Fiona Cox plus Molly Kavanagh, Xenia Parry and Victoria Traff finish fifth and sixth respectively.

Grace Johnson, 11, had to withdraw due to a thumb injury, but had the consolation of carrying the Great Britain flag at the opening ceremony.
