THAMES roach have started to feed and featured prominently in the third round of the Oxford Summer League, fished by six teams of six anglers on the Medley stretch.

The weather was more cloudy and windy than last week, so there were fewer swimmers to contend with.

Geoff Lewingdon (Drennan Banbury Gunsmiths) was drawn five pegs below Godstow Lock and caught roach and perch on the pole with maggot over groundbait for a winning total of 13lb 15oz.

Teammate Tom Hobbs was just four ounces behind with a carp and bream on the feeder, plus roach on the pole and maggot, followed by John Taylor (Tubertini) with 12.7.0.

Roach were also showing in Littlemore AC’s W Henwood Cup on the Thames at Sandford where the 20 anglers produced a total weight of 58.5.0 Pete Clarke won the first match at Sandford with a good net of redfins and perch for 9.6.0, alternating between pole and waggler with caster.

Mark Shepherd opted for waggler and bronze maggot and also picked up roach and perch for second place with 6.13.0. Gerald Perks had an all-roach net on waggler with caster for 5.14.0.

Beehive AC hit the jackpot in their FA and UEFA Cup semi-finals at Panshill Fishery, with more than 1,350lb hitting the scales.

Kevin Jeacock led them home with 208.2.0 of carp to pole, paste and maggot, followed by Tim Belcher with 133.14.0 to pole and pellet, and Steve Dingle with 124.10.0 on pole and paste.

Sixteen anglers took part in the ninth round of the Oxford Carp League series at Theale Pit and due to the hot weather, it proved hard going.

Rob Guppy fished shallow at 16m, catching carp to 5lb on pole and pellet for a winning 127.0.0.

Paul Dann used similar tactics for another all-carp bag of 112.8.0 for second, followed by Craig Partridge with 110.8.0. The latter caught some big fish around the 10lb mark with maggot hookbait over a bed of groundbait.

Tackley Sports AC struggled on the Cherwell at Northbrook, where ten anglers took part in the Colin Shield.

Just 1.14.0 of perch and roach on pole, maggot and worm saw Mick Dempsey to take top spot, followed by Frank Malone with 1.12.0 of perch and roach on pole, pinkie and worm.

Tim Wray was four ounces behind.

Kidlington’s annual outing was to Heyford Fisheries’ Snake Lake, 16 making the trip.

Billy Burnell triumphed with 14.8.0, followed by Maurice Winstone with 11.0.0 and Steve Heath with 8lb.
