Tickets for Oxford United’s opening day clash with Portsmouth have sold out – for the second time.

After selling an initial 2,000 seats for Fratton Park, the club were given an additional allocation of 500.

The final few were snapped up yesterday, swelling the U’s travelling army on August 3.

Gerald Kelly, the club’s new marketing manager, said: “There are not many clubs with as loyal a fan base as this.

“It shows the commitment and passion from the fans, which is something this club should be really proud of.”

The 2,500 figure surpasses United’s biggest away figure of last season, which was the 1,833 who watched the 3-1 win at Wycombe Wanderers last October.

It seems unlikely that the United will receive another allocation.
