MATT Bevans is hoping to make his stay in the new Oxford United development squad a short one as the full back targets a place in the first team.

The 19-year-old is one of three youngsters, with Kenzer Lee and Josh Shama, signed this summer with an eye on the future.

Chairman Ian Lenagan is keen on the new set-up, which is designed to bridge the gap between youth team and first team.

In theory it gives promising players extra time to make the step up to the seniors and provide cover for the senior group, rather than bringing in loans.

Bevans, released by Watford this summer, filled in for David Hunt in Saturday’s 1-1 draw against Birmingham City.

He produced an accomplished performance and has made it clear where he sees his future.

Bevans said: “I'm not here to play development games, I'm 19 going on 20 and I want to be playing as much first-team football as I can.

“Dave Hunt’s a good lad and a good player, but hopefully I can get his shirt.

“With Watford having such a big squad it was hard for me to break in last season.

“I like to think I have a real chance here and if I keep working hard I can break into the team.”

Bevans spent more than half his life at Watford, but left without playing a minute of first-team football.

The defender's progress was halted by a serious knee injury almost two years ago, but he is confident the problem has been solved.

He said: “It’s fine, I’ve been fit now for a year and a half.

“It was in a reserve game away at Southampton, I felt bad before the game and then after about 40 minutes I turned and my knee popped.

“I was out for 11 or 12 months, you have to be strong to get through it but I think it's made me a better person and player.”
