DAVID Hunt knows all about getting out of League Two and the full back believes Oxford United are capable of “something special” this season.

The 30-year-old has won promotion from the fourth tier with Crawley Town, Brentford and Northampton Town and the summer signing draws parallels between those teams and the squad the U’s have assembled.

He said: “They are trying to develop the club from the bottom upwards and I’ve been so impressed with a lot of the players here.

“It’s an exciting time for Oxford. This is the reason I came here, because I don’t feel just that promotion is the aim, I think something special is happening at the club and I wanted to be a part of it.

“With what we’ve been doing in pre-season it isn’t just a winning mentality. There’s a real team togetherness here that I remember having at other clubs where I’ve been promoted.

“Then you look at the potential of what this club can do and taking 2,500 away to Pompey just says it all.”

For the moment his focus is on tomorrow’s friendly against Coventry City.

The right back missed out on making a home debut last weekend due to an infection caused by insect bites on his knees.

Hunt is keen to finally play in yellow at the Kassam Stadium.

He said: “Definitely, everyone wants to make their home debut and that’s one of the reasons I came here, with the fan base we’ve got.

“I’m very excited, all my family want to come to the game, so it’ll be big.

“I was gutted last week, but unfortunately that was the hand I was dealt.”

The game against the Sky Blues will be a chance for him to begin building an understanding with Johnny Mullins.

The centre back re-signed this week and although Hunt did not know the ex-Reading trainee before, he is delighted with the move.

“I have mates who were with him at Rotherham and I know it’s a great signing for the club,” he said.

“We’ve got some great defenders here already and to strengthen it even more shows how good the squad is.”
