A TALENTED junior showed the adults how it’s done en route to victory in the Kirtlington club championships.

Gregor McKenzie is just 12 years old but, playing off a handicap of ten, swept all before him to win the nett competition by five strokes.

Rounds of 79 and 80 were also good enough for fourth in the gross competition.

Kirtlington professional Andy Taylor, who has coached McKenzie for six years, was thrilled, but not surprised with the result.

He said: “I hate to sound blasé about it, but he’s just doing what he normally does.

“It’s a great result, but it wasn’t a shock and it wouldn’t be if he won the gross competition next year.

“I have no doubt he’s a shining star that’s going to come through, but we’re careful to make sure he enjoys it and doesn’t burn out.”

It was the latest in a series of superb results for the Garsington schoolboy, who first picked up a club aged three.

In April he won an event on the British Junior Golf Tour which earned him a place at the Junior World Championships.

Unfortunately he was unable to take up his place in Jakarta, Indonesia, because he was too young.

McKenzie won a qualifier to reach the Callaway Junior World Championship in San Diego this month, but a family holiday also prevented him from entering.

His father, Ewan, said: “Gregor takes it all in his stride, he’s quite a competitive person deep down and wants to do well.

“But he doesn’t get too upset if he hits a bad shot, a lot of people have said he’s got the right temperament for the game, which is nice to see.”
