MICHAEL Raynes admitted he was amazed to see so many Oxford United fans make the 380-mile trip to watch them in midweek.

About 30 away supporters were at the Recreation Park to see the U’s share a 1-1 draw with Alloa Athletic.

Many have stayed up in Scotland to see Saturday’s game at Berwick Rangers and Raynes was surprised by the turnout.

He said: “We couldn’t believe it when we got there and saw fans had travelled up, fair play to them.

“There are some clubs in our division who would take that many away fans for a league game, so the fact they came up to Alloa on a Wednesday night in pre-season is different gravy.”

The centre back was able to play the whole 90 minutes in only the second game of the summer.

With the start of the League Two season just three weeks away, Raynes is enjoying getting back on the pitch with the new-look United squad.

“This is the best part of pre-season when you get to the games, you can run all day, but nothing represents playing,” he said.

“It’s going well, we’ve got some great new boys in and everyone seems to have clicked and is getting on well.

“There’s a decent squad now and fingers crossed it’s looking good.”
