Chris Wilder says Oxford United are unlikely to bring in another striker this summer as he focuses on strengthening at the other end of the pitch.

The club added to their new development squad yesterday with the signing of 19-year-old defenders Kenzer Lee and Matt Bevans, but they are still looking for an experienced centre back.

The U’s boss began the close season hoping to capture two forwards, a target man and a poacher.

Top target Dave Kitson joined last month in what was a coup for the League Two side, but the odds of adding another attacking option appear to be lengthening.

They have been strongly linked with a loan move for Bournemouth hitman Matt Tubbs and while the 28-year-old would represent another significant acquisition, I understand it remains just a rumour at this stage.

With four strikers in the squad, backed up by attack-minded midfielders and wingers Alfie Potter and Sean Rigg, Wilder thinks adding more firepower is a long shot.

“It’s possibly a bit unlikely now,” he said. “We’ve got four with Beano (James Constable), Kits (Dave Kitson), Deane Smalley and Tyrone (Marsh).

“We know Deano can go and play wide right, we know Scotty Davies and Asa (Hall) can play there as well if we wanted to be a bit more solid.

“I think we have good variety and options in any formation.”

The United manager is pleased with what he has got out of the budget so far and with what remains the priority is adding an experienced defender to compete with Jake Wright and Michael Raynes.

Matt Heath’s trial continues on the tour to Scotland this week and he is likely to play some part in tomorrow night’s game at Alloa Athletic.

The squad flew to Edinburgh yesterday with new signings Lee and Bevans.

The pair, who both featured in Saturday’s 2-1 win at Ardley, put pen to paper on 12-month deals following a successful trial.

Lee, a centre half, came through the ranks at West Ham and had a spell at Banbury United last season, while right back Bevans was in Watford’s youth set-up.
