SAM Agarwal became only the eighth player to score a double century in the Varsity Match when he made an unbeaten 213 for Oxford Unversity on the first day at Fenner’s.

His innings, which contained 30 fours and three sixes, came off 264 balls. His century arrived in 145 minutes and his double ton in 255.

It was the fourth highest score in Varsity Match history and put his side firmly in control of the game.

Having been inserted, Oxford openers Ben Jeffrey and Gus Kennedy put on 45 before the latter was trapped lbw, a fate that befell Jeffrey with the score on 69.

Ben Williams and Agarwal took the score to 131 when Williams went for 43, whereupon Agarwal and Matt Winter proceeded to put the Cambridge attack to the sword.

They added 194 for the fourth wicket before Winter became Alasdair Pollock’s second victim, having made 51.
