OXFORDSHIRE’S leading lights had to be content with a supporting role as Harry Bateman claimed victory on Frilford Heath’s Blue Course.
The host club’s Tom Fleming and Oxford Golf Centre’s Adam Wootton finished joint 24th on five-under-par in the PGA Europro Tour event.
But they were seven shots behind New Zealander Bateman (Royal Wellington), who took home the £10,000 first prize.
Rounds of 67, 68 and 69 gave Bateman a total of 204 and a one-shot victory over England’s Scott Campbell (Hallowes).
Richard Wallis (Walmer & Kingsdown), Paul Shields (Kirkhill), George Cowan (Westerhope), Greg Payne (Chobham) and Jack Harrison (Wildwood) were tied third on nine-under-par 207.
Wootton shot rounds of 70, 72 and 69, while Fleming carded 69, 71, 71.
Frilford’s Oli Tite, Michael Younie and Adam Souter missed the cut after shooting one-over, six-over and 12-over respectively.
- THE Oxfordshire’s England amateur international Craig Hinton came joint 44th in the Brabazon Trophy at Formby.
Hinton carded rounds of 73, 80, 75 and 76 for a 16-over-par total.
- THREE Oxfordshire clubs have supplied their winners for the Lombard Trophy regional final at Studley Wood on Friday, July 19.
Lee Fuller (Hadden Hill), Robert Jackson (North Oxford) and Marc Mitchell (Bicester) will compete with their respective professionals Simon McGreal, Lee Jackson and Peter Thompson after winning club qualifiers.
The Lombard Trophy is Europe’s biggest pro-am competition and this year’s final is at Gleneagles, the 2014 Ryder Cup course, from September 3-4.
