OXFORD Rugby League centre Sean Morris admits he is still very much learning the 13-man code, despite enjoying a stellar debut.

Morris was named Premier Sports’ player of the round in Kingstone Press Championship One as Oxford won 40-30 at University of Gloucestershire All Golds.

It was the triple Oxford University rugby union Blue’s first competitive league match and he had not been expecting such an award.

“To be honest, I didn’t know until you emailed,” Morris told the Oxford Mail. “It was a nice surprise.

“I played a half of rugby league for the university side and then a warm-up game before Friday’s match.

“It was a tough match, but it was good fun.

“I am definitely still learning the game.

“The coaches and the other players have been very helpful.

“They have been quite understanding in telling me where I need to be.

“At the end of the day, it is rugby, so there is a lot that crosses over.”

Morris’s hopes of playing rugby union this season were curtailed by an ankle injury and a broken hand, but he was “itching” to get back on the field again.

He said: “Tim Stevens (Oxford University RFC general manager) phoned them up and I got a trial.

“I was lucky enough to be asked to come on board.”

Morris scored one of Oxford’s seven tries in their victory over the All Golds.

He said: “It wasn’t by any means a complete performance, but it was good for us to get out there and get a win.

“There is a lot more to come from us.

“It is not like we have come off the back of three years together.”

Morris was joined by wing Shaun Robinson and hooker John Clough in making the Championship One team of the week.

Oxford head coach Tony Benson said: “Sean was really classy. Defensively, his decision-making was superb, and in attack he was dangerous every time he got the ball.

“It was only his third game of rugby league.

“We’ve seen that he’s an outstanding athlete in training, and he’s so quick and skilful, but to do it in a game situation was very impressive.”
