UNDER-FIRE Oxford United manager Chris Wilder says there is no way he will walk away from the club – and urged everyone to assess the season only once it is finished.

There are four games of the npower League Two campaign remaining, but a top-ten finish is now the limit of their realistic ambitions after suffering an unhappy Easter weekend.

The U’s conceded late goals to draw 1-1 at home to Morecambe on Good Friday and lose 3-2 at Aldershot on Easter Monday.

It extended a poor run which has seen the side pick up one point from the last four games, wrecking any hope of a late surge into the play-offs.

U’s chairman Ian Lenagan has been clear about targeting a top-seven finish this season, so the slump has led to pressure increasing on the manager and his squad.

Wilder is well aware of discontent among a section of the club’s support, but has no intention of quitting.

He said: “I know there are murmurs and rumblings. I can’t do anything about that and I’ve just got to stick my tin hat on.

“I’m not walking away from anything. There’s no way I’m going to do that after four and a half years.”

The U’s boss, who led the club back to the Football League in 2010, is instead focusing on gaining as many points as possible from the final four games.

Whatever happens, Wilder believes the least he has earned during his long tenure at United is for everyone connected with the club to suspend judgement until the season finishes at the end of the month.

He said: “If it does go to the end of the season, everybody will make an assumption and I think that’s what they should do out of respect for everything that’s happened.

“People will talk about where the club is, where it needs to go and what needs to happen.

“But I’m sure those decisions will be made deliberately and with a lot of thought and yes, also with a bit of emotion because that’s what the game is about.”

He added: “The club has changed enormously over the last four and a half years and I’ve been the main part of that.

“I’m not blowing my own trumpet but I, (assistant manager) Mickey Lewis and the staff have done that and are trying to move forward.”
