Amateur jockey Mikey Hamill’s dream start to life in England continued with a sparkling treble at Lockinge’s 60th anniversary meeting, near Wantage.

The 21-year-old, who only came over from Ireland to join Lambourn trainer Sean Curran three weeks ago, struck on his first ride under National Hunt Rules for his new boss aboard Zelos Diktator at Southwell last month.

And he followed that up with his first point-to-point winners in this country on Euro Farmer, Norwich Well and Promanco in front of a bumper crowd of around 6,000 at the Old Berkshire Hunt fixture yesterday.

Hamill, who is staying at the White Horse Inn at Woolstone, near Faringdon, run by Keith Adams, opened his account on Euro Farmer for Sally Randell’s Hatford yard, near Stanford in the Vale.

The 13-year-old romped home in the confined by 12 lengths from Lough Derg, the former Grade 1 winning hurdler, whose rider Thady Duff raised more than £2,500 for the Injured Jockeys’ Fund and the retraining of racehorses by competing in the event.

Hamill made it a double on Norwich Well, for Emma Chugg, who is secretary to Lambourn trainer Oliver Sherwood, with his mount just holding on in a thrilling finish as four horses flashed past the post together in the restricted after he nipped up the inside coming round the final bend.

And he completed the hat-trick in the first division of the open maiden when coming in for a spare ride on Promanco, trained by Marcus Foley at Rockley, near Marlborough, after Sam Painting was ruled out following a first-fence fall from Sapphire Moon in the restricted.

After receiving the trophy for the best riding performance of the day from Stan Mellor, the first jockey to post 1,000 winners under National Hunt Rules, Hamill said: “I didn’t think it would take off as it has.

“It’s brilliant, but I don’t want to let it go to my head.”

Randell was completing her first double with Euro Farmer after saddling Nipper John to foil Owston Ferry’s bid to land the members’ race for a third successive year.

The 12-year-old, owned by former Norwich City and Republic of Ireland footballer Lee Power, boosted the hopes of Lambourn-based Brodie Hampson in her quest to be the leading novice rider.

Hampson, 18, said: “It would mean everything to me. Last year I started off and broke my back.”

Rumbavu survived a mistake at the second-last to bound eight lengths clear of Or Bleu to land the mixed open for Sam Waley-Cohen, and his trainer-father Robert, who lives at Edgehill, near Banbury.

Sam said: “We have had him at home since he was unraced and he has been a great horse for me.”

Seventeen-year-old James King, from Stroud, notched a winner on his first ride aboard the Tim Sage-trained Presentandcorrect in the Point-to-Point Owners & Riders’ Association Club Members’ race for veteran and novice riders.

And Rahealty gave East Garston trainer Kirstin Mellor her first winner when taking the second division of the open maiden in the hands of Kevin Jones by five lengths from Mr McGregor at 25-1.

Mellor, 24, a stable groom with Lambourn trainer Jamie Osborne, was delighted by the success, but admitted: “It’s a relief as well because it makes all the hard work worthwhile.”
