OXFORD United's players have not lost any confidence through suffering their first defeat of the season.

That's the conviction of defender Chris Willmott, who believes last weekend's FA Cup defeat at Wycombe will have no adverse effect on Oxford's bid to win the Conference title.

The U's saw their ??-match unbeaten run ended by a late Stefan Oakes strike at the weekend.

But Willmott says the squad's mental strength will ensure that the setback does not affect their league form.

He said: "Obviously our priority is to keep winning in the league and try to secure promotion.

"It would have been nice to have gone on a couple of rounds in the FA Cup and to have got a big side. Sadly, that's over now and it's not going to happen.

"I think we can remain confident though.

"We're still unbeaten in the league. All in all, we put on a good show and were a little bit unfortunate - they were two sloppy goals really.

"That's finished with and we look forward to Gravesend now to get back on track."

There wasn't a great deal between the sides at Adams Park, and United, who are still unbeaten in the league after 18 games, can take heart from that, because Wycombe have proved one of the best sides in League Two.

Willmott said: "I thought overall we matched them throughout the game really.

"They didn't really test us too often and then Johnno (Gavin Johnson) came back with a great free-kick when it looked like we were running out of time.

"We got it back to 1-1 with five minutes to go and were just thinking 'maybe we'll take a replay' and then they struck again."

And United's former Wimbledon and Northampton defender didn't feel it was so much a case of United switching off as Wycombe just hitting back with a good goal.

"I don't think we did switch off because I don't think we even touched the ball!

"Straight from their kick-off, they got down the side, put a deep cross in and Oakes finished it really well.

"From our point of view, it was a bad goal to conceded at a very bad time.

"I think you could tell that the standard was better than we're used to, throughout the team, but I thought we matched them and were probably worthy of a replay.

"The second goal was unfortunate in that it fell to the man who's got the best left foot in their team."
