PETER Leven will have knee surgery today which will rule the Oxford United star out until the final month of the season.

Scans were taken yesterday and the specialist advised an operation was the only realistic option for the midfielder’s right knee.

The keyhole procedure, known as an arthroscopy, is due to take place at the Cromwell Hospital in west London.

It takes eight weeks to recover fully, which would keep Leven on the sidelines until early April – when the U’s will have only a handful of league games left.

Often players can return to fitness faster than expected, but U’s physio Andy Lord explained it was unlikely with this type of injury.

He said: “The doctors don’t like people coming back before eight weeks.

“You have to allow it to heal and then build the strength of the joint up, or it will just swell up again.”

United’s season has been plagued by injuries to key players and this is a huge blow to both the player and the side.

Manager Chris Wilder described the 29-year-old in November as “arguably the best player in League Two” when fully fit.

But the Scot has rarely been 100 per cent in this entire campaign, following surgery for shoulder and knee problems in the summer.

He missed the first month of the season and the U’s have been managing the injury virtually ever since.

I'm really beginning to think there's some truth that the pre-season trips to the US and playing and training on 3G pitches has done us no good.

There is a pattern here and it is about the historic injury records of players such as Pittman Capaldi Davis and Leven before they were signed, not what has happened since. You then have to ask who was in charge and pushed through these signings.

i see you lost to the Swindon reserves last saturday at Southend.

Him being injured wont make any difference as you are still a poor team with or without him.

Just watching the Englsnd v Brazil game on ITV and I make two observations. 1. They will never match the BBC for quality presentation and commentary. 2. The standard of Football played by OU is not bad at all, for all the millionaires on display the overall play is not brilliant and the finishing certainly doesn't put OU to shame. I still don't believe the play offs are a probability BUT there is usually more commitment and passion in an OU match than on display tonight.

Ps. Leven injury is a blow but maybe just maybe things aren't so bleak, get shot of lenaghan and reinstate Kelvyn, win the Euromillions and buy out Kassam and the future could be bright, if only it was so easy, but I can dream.

now wouldn't that be a dream, to win the Euro millions, buy the ground from old scrooge, build the 4th stand, get that cursed name " Kassam " off of all the street signs and the buildings, re name it The New Manor ( as eventually the New part would be dropped, inside the new 4 th stand would be an Oxford United supporters club, then the road that runs in front of the bowling place could be named London Road East, that way the 4 th stand would become the London road end, and so history would have repeated itself, ooop's, I just fell out of bed, didn't realize I was only dreaming.

Hire professional coaches and scouts. Drop ticket prices and sell out every game so 20k people can watch OUFC climb from middling league 2 to Premier League glory...

Then I wake up, put on my pants and go to work :-(
