Frilford Heath’s Eddie Pepperell has received a late call-up to compete in South African Open which starts today at Serengeti.

And the 21-year-old, pictured right, could not hide his excitement after being handed his first taste of action on the European Tour.

Pepperell, who has qualified to compete on the tour next year, has got into this penultimate event of 2012 as a winner on the Challenge Tour, where he finished 13th on the money list.

European Ryder Cup winner Martin Kaymer and former US Masters winner Charl Schwartzel are among the field.

Before he departed on Monday, Pepperell tweeted: “Off to the glorious land of South Africa tonight to play my 1st ever ET event . . . I can’t wait.”

Former Oxford United boss Mark Lawrenson is the guest personality at the Five Star Events’ celebrity golf day at Frilford Heath tomorrow.

There will be a field of 80 for the final event in the series which has raised £10,000 for charity.

The money will be presented to the Oakleigh School, near Watford.
