FOOTBALL: Barcelos is City's supersub
10:00am Monday 12th November 2012 in Sport
Substitute Felipe Barcelos made an instant impact after coming off the bench, firing Oxford City into the first round of the FA Carlsberg Trophy at Evo-Stik Southern League Division 1 South & West side Sholing on Saturday with a 1-0 success.
Barcelos found the net just two minutes after his introduction and provided a rare moment of quality in what was an otherwise scrappy and disjointed match.
City made a poor start, with their on-loan Wycombe goalkeeper Matt Ingram denying Mike Carter from long range.
The visitors suffered a blow when Liam Malone hobbled off with a calf injury, but started to impose themselves more.
The tricky Nabil Sharif was unlucky not to be awarded a penalty after taking a tumble, but the referee waved play on.
City kept up the pressure, with Sholing goalkeeper Matt Brown saving Darren Pond’s fierce shot at full-stretch. He then denied Nick Stanley from close range, with Pond blazing the rebound over.
City continued to pile forward at the start of the second half, but were nearly caught on the coun-ter-attack when Lee Wort broke clear, only to fire against the post with only Brown to beat.
The introduction of Barcelos was rewarded two minutes after he came on, racing onto a through ball and coolly slotted past Brown to give City the edge.
Sholing went looking for an equaliser with Ingram keeping out Wort’s volley, before denying Tyronne Bowers.
Despite the hosts’ efforts, City held on to make today’s first round draw for the first time since 2004.
