CHRIS Wilder could not fault Oxford United’s effort against Torquay United on Saturday.
But the U’s boss was left frustrated that an improved performance did not bring more than a goalless draw.
Going into the game on the back of a 3-2 defeat at home to Dagenham in midweek, United were in control for the majority of the game and were dominant after half-time.
But they were unable to convert the pressure into goals.
“I’m disappointed we’ve not won – I didn’t think we got the rewards that our play deserved,” the United manager said.
“The chairman (Ian Lenagan) put in his programme notes that seasons are defined by the reaction to disappointment and I thought that was a fantastic reaction to an extremely disappointing Tuesday. “It wasn’t a disaster on Tuesday but it was a disappointment, so we had to get on with it and stick our chests out. “The players have to take responsibility and I think they did that all afternoon. “I can’t fault them, everybody who watched the game will be extremely puzzled as to how we’ve not got a win.”
Wilder admitted taking a single point from the two home games fell short of expectations.
However, he felt the display against Torquay was reason to be positive.
He said: “It is a disappointing points tally for the week, we’ve had chalk and cheese performances. “It’s been a tough few days after Tuesday, but I think if people are honest that have watched us they will think that’s a lot better.
“People will always pick up on the negative performances and not look at the consistent, decent performances that we’ve had over the last month, when we’ve got our better players back.
“It always gives us something to build on because the players showed a reaction.”

We need god performances to get up into the top three - there is time but things must be much better than 'decent'
£100 from me to a regitsered charity if we go up at the end of the season - very happy to pay up

I am not a Wilder fan. I have not forgiven him for te last nine games of last season and the six losses h season. However, the Torquay performance was not bad at all and there was some good football played by Oxford. If only one of the many chances had to go in and it would have been a much different story. The team seemed to have a much better balance to it. Having said that on cannot rely on Wilder to stick with a well ballanced team. He will swap it al about and we will drop more points. To that extent Wilder can be relied upon.
