CYCLE SPEEDWAY: Horspath Hammers are treble winners
12:00pm Saturday 3rd November 2012 in Sport
Horspath Hammers finally got their hands on the BCTG Elite League title with a 94-81 victory away to Sheffield Stars.
It completed a superb treble for Hammers, who earlier in the season won the British Team and British Open Fours crowns.
And with Hammers’ second string winning the Elite Combination title, it completed a great weekend for the club.
After slipping up at home to Poole Comets, Horspath were determined not to let it happen again.
And, boosted by the return of Steve Harris from Poland, clinched the crown as they inflicted the hosts’ first home defeat of the season, which was captured on Sky Sports’ Sports Unlimited cameras.
Hammers had taken an early lead, but Stars hit back to lead by one by heat six.
However, Horspath, whose skipper Mark Boaler raced despite an injury, replied in the next and never looked back as they eased to victory.
Horspath scorers: L Bates 17, S Harris 16+1, M Carmichael 13+1, M Szymczak 13, L Osborne 12+1, M Boaler 8+2, S Rudman 8+1, E Thaw 7+1.
Horspath won the Elite Combination crown with a 79-50 win against Sheffield, with maximums from Mike Burgess and Lee Clarke.
Some superb passes from Zac Payne were highlights of a great team display.
Horspath scorers: S Munden 16+2, M Burgess 16, L Clarke 15+1, Z Payne 13+3, W Clarke 10, R Harrison 9+1.
Horspath’s outdoor season concludes tomorrow with a Regional League double-header against Hellingly (12) and Swindon (2.30pm).
