HUNDREDS of children from across Oxfordshire are being invited to see how Minis are made at the car plant in Cowley.

About 240 teenagers are being given the chance to take a tour of the BMW plant and meet the company’s apprentices.

Plant Oxford is taking part in the See Inside Manufacturing initiative, which aims to highlight career opportunities in the car industry.

In June, Business Secretary Vince Cable joined a group of careers advisers to see what the plant had to offer.

Human resources apprentice Charlotte Jupp said: “It will be great to see so many young people coming to the plant from different schools across Oxfordshire.

“Mr Cable chatted about our experiences when he visited and we are looking forward to meeting students who might one day work here.”

Managing director of Mini Plant Oxford Dr Jurgen Hedrich said: “We hope to welcome more than 200 young people through the plant during the initiative and hope many of our visitors will be encouraged to apply for an apprenticeship here.”

Schools taking part include Carterton Community College, Gosford Hill School in Kidlington, Chipping Norton School, St Gregory the Great School in Cowley, and Bartholomew School in Eynsham.

Youngsters will be shown the plant’s bodyshop and assembly facilities as well as the quality and engineering centre.

See Inside Manufacturing events at Mini Plant Oxford started yesterday and will run until Friday, October 21.
