MORE than 50 people braved the cold to explore the night sky above Oxford’s South Park.

The session, which was led by Dr Ian Griffin, an astronomer and the chief executive of Science Oxford, aimed to teach budding astronomers more about the stars.

Dr Griffin said: “We had a real mix of people turn out, aged from five to 80.

“Everyone got a free star map and learned about the constellations and how to use binoculars and telescopes.”

The group spent an hour in the park on Wednesday night, looking at heavenly bodies.

Dr Griffin said: “It was really good fun, we could see Jupiter and there was a fantastic moonrise. South Park is one of the only places in Oxford where you can see the sky so well, so I hope everyone really enjoyed themselves.”

The evening was part of Science Oxford Live’s fifth birthday celebrations.

Other events have included talks from sex researcher Dr Petra Boynton and Oxford University neurologist Prof Colin Blakemore, who discussed studies of the brain.
