AMERICAN author Michael Dahl gave schoolchildren a fright at Edward Feild Primary School in Kidlington.

The writer, who is on a UK tour this month, decided to give pupils a spooky story-telling workshop to inspire them to take up reading.

Mr Dahl, from Minnesota, has written more than 100 children’s books including The Book That Ate My Brother and Zombie In The Library.

He said: “Scary stories are my favourite thing. At the end we can close the book, put it down and know it was just pretend. Since we all are afraid of something, a spooky story lets us face our fear in a safe way, through the words on the paper. We learn that other people share our fears.”

As part of the session earlier this month pupils enjoyed writing activities, games and produced their own spooky stories.

Headteacher Simon Jackson said: “We want to create a love of reading among our children, so getting authors like Michael to come in is really exciting for the children and enthuses them.”
