A YOUNG dynamic duo secured cycling success for their former school.

Bure Park Primary, Bicester, has taken home the title of the U11 Girls British Schools National Cycle Champions thanks to the two pupils.

The teamwork of 11-year-olds Millie Couzens, of Bure Park, and Amelia Cox, of Langford Village, secured the glory for their school, with Millie also being crowned individual national champion.

Millie said: “I was really happy and excited when I found out – just very proud. I had done a lot of training and now I have been doing more because I think I am better than I thought I was.

“It was really good to be in a team with Amelia too.” The winning pair had to compete in a number of events and courses throughout the year – rollers, cyclo cross, road racing, hill climb and track racing.

They travelled to Redditch to compete in the cyclo cross and Millie also went as far as Derby for the rollers, road race and cyclo cross.

Millie won each of her rounds.

Amelia said: “We had to ride round an off-road course which took us in and out of trees. I was a bit nervous but once I got going I was fine and I liked doing the cyclo cross.

“I have been cycling for about three or four years and I train every Saturday with Bicester Millennium Cycling Club. I like it because it is fun and I learn lots of skills.”

Millie added: “I did the rollers event, which is done inside on cylinders which you cycle on. Then I did the cyclo cross which is off-road on the grass, and then the road race which we did on a race circuit.

“My favourite was probably the cyclo cross because it is different and more interesting.

“I have been cycling for a couple of years but this is the first year I have started doing it properly. Last year I got my racing bike and before that I was just using my mountain bike.”

The pair, who have now moved on to secondary education, with Millie at The Bicester School and Amelia at The Cooper School, were congratulated by friends and teachers at Bure Park Primary School.

Headteacher Robert Pearson said: “The school is extremely proud of the girls and their achievements.”
