Bicester super middleweight Sam Edmonds took centre stage by knocking out Swindon’s Luke Hambidge in the first round at the club’s annual show at Oxford Town Hall.

A sell-out crowd of more than 1,000 fans saw the host club come away with an impressive array of six victories.

Edmonds, who was back in action after an eight-month lay-off, started well, catching Hambidge with some well-timed counter hooks.

Edmonds rocked Hambidge with several blows to the body and as the Wiltshire fighter let his elbows drop in an attempt to protect himself, Edmonds targeted Hambidge’s chin.

And one minute and 50 seconds into the contest, a three-punch combination dropped Hambidge in an emphatic show of punching power.

Bicester head coach Daza Usher said:“Sam showed real dedication in training for this contest.

“He’s been with the club for two years now and in that time he has improved tremendously.

“On paper this should have been a tough match for him, but due to the dedication he has put in to his training, he made easy work of it.”

Edmonds was one of six winners for the Bicester club.

Light heavyweight Luke Bucknell added another victory to his growing record, which now stands at four wins with only one defeat.

Using his supreme fitness, he outworked Lewis Mackay, throwing clusters of punches from behind the jab. Bucknell took every round on the score cards. Kevin Perry also won impressively, stopping Luke Clapham, of the Oxford Martials Arts Academy, with a vicious left uppercut in the third round of their light middlweight contest.

There was also a victory for former Oxford City and Abingdon United footballer Mark Simms, who made a successful Bicester debut against Jack Mnatzaganian, winning 29-28 on points in their light heavyweight battle.

Army officer Cairan Evens-Fry defeated Maidenhead’s Jack Davies on points in their super middlweight bout.

And middleweight Adam Morris also gained a points verdict against Gloucester’s VJ Chawda.
