The brother of Oxford United striker James Roberts has died after being involved in a car accident on Saturday night.

Ben Roberts, 16, was involved in the crash near Aylesbury Rugby Club just before 10pm and died at the scene.

His family have released the following statement: “Ben was the perfect friend, perfect brother and the perfect son.

“Full of love, energy, happiness and life he loved nothing more than to be with his friends at the skate park, from morning to night.

“He loved being with his family; cooking, eating and watching bad films.  No words can describe our loss; the void that has been left will never be filled.

“But his family and friends will never ever forget him – his smiles, sense of fun and infectious personality will remain cherished by all. Rest in peace Ben, we love you so so very much.”

The club offered its condolences to the Roberts family and confirmed that a minute’s silence would be held before Saturday's home game against AFC Wimbledon.

The club statement read: “The thoughts of everyone at Oxford United are with James Roberts and his family after the tragic death of his brother Ben at the weekend.

“Ben, 16, died in a car accident in Weston Turville on Saturday night.

“The club offers it sincerest condolences to the Roberts family and will hold a minute’s silence before the game at home to AFC Wimbledon on Saturday."

Roberts, 19, made his first team debut for Oxford United in October last year and is currently on loan to Chester.

The club added: “Both Oxford United and Chester, where he is currently on loan, will allow James as much time as he feels he needs before he returns to playing football.

“The two clubs would also ask all supporters and media to respect the Roberts family’s right to privacy at this very difficult time.”
