A MAN who flouted a five-year ban from an area of Oxford in order to buy petrol to sniff and get high was jailed yesterday.

Robbie Stephens, 23, was also sentenced for racially assaulting a police officer the day he was arrested.

But having been in custody since the offence, Stephens will be released almost immediately, a judge said.

Oxford Crown Court heard how Stephens, of no fixed address, was banned from Blackbird Leys, Greater Leys and Rose Hill for five years on December 15 under the terms of an Anti-Social Behaviour Order (Asbo).

Oxford Magistrates’ Court made the order after police said Stephens made a string of abusive comments to women and girls in Blackbird Leys on September 19.

Thames Valley Police said he also assaulted his own grandfather that day and police officers who tried to arrest him.

He was released from custody on December 18 and next day breached the Asbo by going to his grandparents’ home in Blackbirds Leys.

He was convicted of that first breach and sentenced to spend 24 weeks in custody.

He was released again on February 2 and two days later committed the second breach, for which he was sentenced yesterday, by going to the Heyford Hill Sainsbury’s where police found he had just bought petrol.

He was arrested, then racially abused Oxford antisocial behaviour officer Mike Ellis.

Prosecutor Naomi Perry said: “He went into the petrol station to get petrol because he sniffs it and becomes violent.”

Judge Zoe Smith sentenced him to 21 weeks in custody for the Asbo breach and gave him a 12-month conditional discharge for the assault.

She said: “You have served a lot of time in custody and you will no doubt be released almost immediately.”

The Asbo will continue.
