In a celebration of longer days and spring around the corner, I opened a bottle that had been a gift. The label is attractive, not too fancy and high brow, but comfortable and a bit rugged, like a walk on a country path. It has a deep ruby colour with a lighter slightly purple rim. Black cherries and spice fill the aroma. The flavour coats your mouth creating a complex mingling of dark fruits and coffee grounds. The acid is lighter than the tannins. The latter is noticeable, but subtle. It has a long finish and is excellent with grilled steak, mediterranean vegetables and roasted potatoes. This would be a good wine to open when you have friends over for an outdoor barbecue.
A small amount of research revealed this wine was created to compete with Chateauneuf-du-Pape. It contains predominantly mourvedre grapes.
Waitrose sells this wine for £12.34. It probably won't become a "house" wine at that price, but I'll spread the vino and take it as a gift to a future party. Wines like this should be shared!
