OXFORD is one of the most prosperous parts of the UK. That our representatives want to balance the books by cutting over half the beds available for the most vulnerable, most disadvantaged people, the homeless, shames us all.
More so, since it is quite unnecessary. Oxfordshire has six local authorities. There is nothing God-given about that.
A well-researched study has shown that reducing them to one unitary authority would save £45m a year. That’s £45m more to spend on homelessness and other vital services.
Other permutations are possible, also giving big savings. But politicians, Left and Right, wont play, because they see a threat to their respective party fiefdoms.
Oxford City won’t even share support services with other councils, as many other local authorities now do to save money. The most needy pay a terrible price for their intransigence.
