So Ian Cummings recommends that all patriotic Scots vote yes (‘Independence debate should not just be about the financial aspects’, September 8).

He states we don’t govern an empire covering a quarter of the globe. This is the 21st century – I wouldn’t think it would be fitting considering World War Two and Germany’s attempt to conquer the world and rule with fear and terror wherever they felt they needed to.

There were many wars in Scotland between the house of Bruce and house of Balliol – it was a country at war with itself for many years. As the Stuart kings and queens ruled both kingdoms in 1707 it was decided to merge and become the kingdom of Great Britain. For more than 300 years there has been a healthy unity between England and Scotland. Both countries along with the other countries of Northern Ireland and Wales have had a healthy time. Yes, there have been various problems under various governments which must be tackled by all the countries of Great Britain.

If Scotland vote yes, then surely all individual Scottish people living in England would be required to apply for a visa – as with Scotland not being subject to freedom of movement because they are an independent country and would not be part of the EU? We would also require all our Navy to return to England. There is also a good possibility that ship building would be cancelled and returned to England.

The pound is British, Scotland won’t be British so they would need an individual currency and proper exchange rates. Maybe remove our tax breaks from them. Surely it would be better for Scotland to remain part of Great Britain?
