l WAS delighted to read that the model of the LMS Oxford station will be at the forthcoming Abingdon Model Railway Show. What was not mentioned was that part of this wonderful model is a moving replica in miniature of Oxford’s LMS swingbridge, which crosses the Sheepwash Channel, just to the north of the present station.

While the LMS station is no more, the swingbridge has survived as the last part of Oxford’s other railway, although it is now in a very sorry state and a building at risk.

We have had support from Network Rail, Chiltern Railways and the Railway Heritage Trust but are still short of the funds we need to restore it. We are hopeful that a bid to the Heritage Lottery Fund will enable us to do the work, so that generations to come can know of the story of Oxford’s second railway and that we can share it with the widest of audiences. Wish us luck.

We are doing all we can to save this important part of Oxford’s town heritage for all before it is too late and we hope lots of people go and see the model when it comes.
