IT SHOULD not take a photo to change a government’s policy, but the image of a child’s body on a beach might just do that.
For too long our government has turned its head away, or used dangerous rhetoric to describe those in Calais and beyond desperate to enter the country.
But the problem cannot be ignored any more as the nation’s eyes have been opened to the sheer horror of what those looking to escape Syria have had to endure.
While the doors cannot be flung fully open, it is clear that, compared to our European neighbours, we have ignored our burden and can do more.
David Cameron and his fellow Conservatives have had to re-assess their position – no more talk of “swarms” of “marauding” migrants – as photos continue to emerge of families willing to risk life and limb for a better future.
Both Mr Cameron and Nicola Blackwood came out yesterday and admitted more can be done. And so now we must make sure that their words are carried through and are not just hollow sentiments.
Otherwise the brutal images being broadcast worldwide will become far too commonplace and should weigh heavy on our politicians’ consciences.
