ONLY we, the residents of Oxford, are to blame for the humongous fatbergs clogging up our sewers.
Like the late family goldfish, people think they can flush any old thing down the drain and just forget it about it.
But under the city’s streets, our already stretched waste water pipes look to be buckling under the pressure of clogged-up balls of fat. It’s not a pretty sight. No one wants to be greeted by boulder-like heaps of congealed fat, grease, wet wipes and all manner of horrible other things.
Oxford is an ancient city and our sewerage system reflects that. If we don’t take care when pouring things down the drain it is us who will pay. Many people complain about rising water bills, but a lot of that money is going towards dealing with the fatberg problem – when this is the case we must shoulder some of responsibility.
Restaurants and bars in Oxford should know how to dispose of fat and grease properly. And we are all told that wet wipes are not suitable for flushing.
Yet people still continue to do it, most likely out of laziness. And the consequences can prove catastrophic, as anyone who remembers the ‘berg in Frideswide Square last April will remember.
