THE evolution of words has always been an indicator of the progress of man.
With every invention must come a term to describe it, and so the dictionary is a treasure trove of where we have been, where we are and our aspirations for the future.
Vape is just the latest word that has come into being as technology advances.
Purists may baulk at this, and others such as selfie and omnishambles, being accepted by Oxford Dictionaries editors but we have been coining new phrases since our ancestors first uttered words.
Who knows what we will make next year’s word of the year – and surely that is the fun of our ever-evolving language?
