Sometimes we wonder exactly what press officers are there to do.

One key task should be to promote a positive image of your employer, particularly when rascally old journalists come knocking at the door?

Not DIY giant B&Q, evidently. We published the heartwarming story of Dominic Stickley, 16, who works weekends at the Abingdon B&Q branch and bravely foiled a thief who tried to snatch £1,000 from his till.

We were alerted to this good news story by a reader, who wanted Dominic to be quite rightly praised.

So we contacted the B&Q press office, out of courtesy as much as anything, to say we wanted to give Dominic his due.

Their response was to attempt to ban us from giving Dominic, their employee who stopped £1,000 being stolen from their business, his moment in the sun.

They didn’t succeed, we’re happy to say.

Given that the Daily Mail picked up on our story, published last Saturday, it seems like quite a few people thought Dominic’s actions were commendable.

As for B&Q’s press team, the clue is in the name: public relations Following our story about the new post office branch opening at Burgrey Stores in Sutton Courtenay, which ran in Tuesday’s Oxford Mail, we have been contacted by the former sub-postmaster working at the Costcutter shop in Bradstocks Way.

Rita Pike has been in touch to clarify that she did not resign when that branch closed in July last year.

Mrs Pike explained that she had to leave because the shop owner no longer wanted to run a branch there, and added that she recommended Burgrey Stores as a new location because she wanted a post office to keep running in the village.

David Walliams jokes his wife is already jealous of his relationship with Britain’s Got Talent co-host Simon Cowell.

Unfortunately the answer on Monday’s Coffee Break page suggested that she was jealous of his relationship with himself, which we’re happy to confirm is certainly not true.

We apologise for the error.
