CONSERVATIVE Party leader David Cameron, who was this week depicted as 'Dave the Chameleon' by Labour, turned from blue to green and probably back to blue again yesterday when he jetted off to explore the melting polar ice cap in the Arctic.

The Witney MP, whom opposition parties claimed changes his colour to match any situation, is travelling by dog sled to the remote research station of Ny-Alesund, on the remote island of Spitsbergen normally home to Polar bears and a few hardy Russian coalminers, to see the effects of global warming first hand. But the Tories' new-found environmental compassion under Dave has angered some party members, who are upset that traditional Tory values, like law and order and sovereignty, have taken a back seat to green issues.

IT'S not often you hear the Greens calling for heads to roll, is it?

But that's exactly what the Oxfordshire branch of the eco-party has done this week in the light of the continuing NHS cash crisis.

Displaying a not-often-seen fiery side, Larry Sanders, the Greens' leader on Oxfordshire County Council, said: "It's very simple Patricia Hewitt must go.

"She must take full responsibility for the mess she has created and the Government must implement immediate measures, such as the scrapping of the internal market and the reversal of the privatisation."

GAFFE-PRONE Henley MP Boris Johnson has an ideal opportunity to atone for some recent (alleged) misdemeanours when he takes to the football pitch for a special game to mark the 40th anniversary of England's World Cup victory over Germany.

The Tory shadow higher education spokesman, 42, is appearing in a charity match alongside ex-pros like Gazza and John Barnes before the tournament kicks off for real in the Fatherland.

The Insider has learned Johnson, who has said he will play in his school rugby boots, is likely to be given a central defensive role with strict instructions to halt a fearsome advancing opposition tide.

In fact, something he has become quite accustomed to.

IN UNRELATED news, Tory MP for Wantage and Didcot Ed Vaizey has become of the biggest fans of the Childrey Challengers the under-14 boys football team currently battling for promotion in the Oxford Mail B League.

Childrey Challengers, who are unbeaten this year, did not have a game last weekend because of the Easter break.

To soften the blow somewhat, they received a visit from Mr Vaizey at a training session instead.

We all know Ed is one of the coolest kittens around at least he has managed to back a winning team, unlike his leader David Cameron who is an avid Aston Villa supporter.

CONTINUING this week's footballing theme, Oxford City Council holds its annual five-a-side tournament at Blackbird Leys Leisure Centre on Sunday.

A number of teams with employees male and female from across the Town Hall are competing, with Labour city councillor and fully qualified referee Ed Turner keeping order.
