What is it about men and their gadgets? As soon as they have acquired the latest double sprocketed, turbo-charged, fuel-injected gizmo, their best mate has got the quad-sprocketed, super turbo- charged, rocket-powered version . . . with knobs on.

And what man doesn’t think he is king of the barbecue – even if he needs a sat nav to find his way to the kitchen.

There are garden gadgets for everything – from straightening cucumbers to electronic sensors that text or tweet you when your plants need watering. And I am a great fan of the solar gadgets, with some really clever ones to power anything from garden lighting to water features and irrigation systems.

But this week I am taking a look at some of the best girlie gadgets for the garden: n Fab pink flower scissors in a co-ordinating dusky pink leather pouch which can thread on to a belt from The Gorgeous Gardener at Annabel James.

n A remote controlled robot mower. Mows the lawn, so you don’t have to. Expect to pay around £1,000.

n X-hose expandable hose. Magically expands up to three times in size when you need it. When not in use, it concertinas down for easy storage and obediently lies dormant until the next time you need it. If only everything in life could be that straightforward!

n WelliTop cover. We might battle with slugs, snails, puppydog tails and tackle bigger garden foe such as pigeons and rabbits, but I am afraid to say that some of us still prefer not to find a boot-full of spiders and creepy crawlies. These wellie boot tops mean you can keep your boots in the shed or garage and know they won’t fill up with unwanted invaders in search of a new home. From www.gizzoo.co.uk n Weed control fabric. Saves hours of backache and absolutely essential for any gardener who wants to minimize the time spent weeding. We use it for all our garden design projects alongside good quality mulch to keep weeds at bay.

But perhaps best gadgets of all are the old ones. Simply a comfy hammock, an ice bucket, a cold glass of white wine and the time to sit back and enjoy the garden at its best. Heaven!
