PREMIERSHIP champions from the most recent ‘Winter’ campaign, the Plough (Wolvercote) are posting serious intent to add the equivalent Summer League crown. This they clearly demonstrated last Thursday with a brutally-overwhelming victory against the Black’s Head (Bletchingdon), 94-53. In so doing, they also registered the single biggest score of the season so far.

However, standing in their way are the imposing presence of reigning titleholders, the Ploughman’s Bunch! They were equally impressive in this latest round of fixtures in seeing off fellow divisional rivals, Far From The Madding Crowd ‘A’ (Oxford City), by a convincing 81-68 scoreline. For now, the Bunch! remain in the driving seat, topping the section, having recorded one win more than the Plough. The eagerly-anticipated clash of these quizzing goliaths at the end of the month could well determine the destination of the silverware, and accompanying bragging rights. The Bunch! are not only on a roll (excuse the pun) in regard to their match results but, it also appears, in relation to the culinary delights at the cessation of the evening’s hostilities. Perhaps not wanting to be upstaged, following reports in this column of the Royal Sun’s excellent Cumberland sausages, FFTMC, Skipper Lang informs me, laid on a sumptuous feast of Italian cuisine, the taste of the buffalo mozzarella, she purrs, still lingering on her team’s collective palate!

Result of the night, if it wasn’t the antipasto, surely belongs to the Seacourt Bridge (Botley) for their 78-68 success over Section One front-runners the Green Road Club (Kidlington). They face an unenviable run-in, but a couple of repeats of this type of win and they could yet threaten for honours. Meanwhile, The Royal Sun (Begbroke) took full advantage of the Green Road’s setback by comprehensively defeating FFTMC ‘B’, 68-48, and returning to pole position in the table.

The recent revival of the Gardener’s Arms (North Parade), highlighted here seven days ago, continues unabated, their victims on this occasion being visitors, the North Oxford Conservative Club (Summertown). A close tussle saw the home-side prevail 65-62. This excellent run of form has taken the Gardener’s to just two points behind the league leaders.

In contrast, the White Hart (Eynsham) had been experiencing a lean time of it, running up four straight losses. However, they ended this miserable sequence with a fine performance in edging past Black Swan (East Oxford), 65-56.

While there are still a few weeks left in the current season, preparation is being made for the Winter Leagues beginning in mid-October.
