IT has been 70 years since Land Rovers were introduced into the automotive world and Bicester Heritage are marking the occasion.

The former World War Two bomber station is playing host to an event called Land Rover Legends.

This weekend will see scores of Land Rovers from years gone, as well as those up to the present day, flood the former RAF Bicester site to celebrate the anniversary.

Among the exhibitions will be one of the three Land Rover prototype vehicles on show – the L03.

The L03 was driven from London to Amsterdam by a young Ernie Bacon (son of Mr. Bacon – the then manager of Rover Company’s London depot at Seagrave Road in Fulham).

L03 was ‘despatched out’ of Seagrave Road by Mr. Bacon on Tuesday 27 April 1948, and driven to Amsterdam by a young Ernie to join the Rover Company showcase launching the brand to the world seven decades ago.

Organisers said: "L03 is clearly steeped in Land Rover history, and through the 1950s and 60s changed hands a couple of times before being bought in 1974 by the current owner.

"Lovingly maintained and restored, the vehicle has participated in every major Land Rover milestone since – with a number of television appearances under its belt over the decades."

The event will run on both days from 10am through to 6pm.

Tickets are £16 in advance for a one day ticket, or 320 on the gate which is cash only.
