A CAMPAIGN to cut a town’s use of plastic is starting to become a reality as it rewarded the efforts of two Abingdon cafes.
Eco-friendly businesses The Mouse Hole Café in the Abingdon County Hall Museum and the Barns Café at Christchurch Northcourt Road both received five star certificates for their achievements in reducing plastic use.
The Mouse Hole Cafe was particularly praised for selling reusable Ecoffee cups, made from bamboo, and giving a 10 per cent price reduction for customers who bring their own cups to be filled, and the use of recyclable cardboard takeaway cups.
The award has been created by environment action group Abingdon Carbon Cutters as part of a new bid to tackle locally the problem’s caused by single-use plastic.
Members have set up Abingdon Cuts Plastic to try to change the habits of residents and businesses in the town when it comes to recycling and using plastic, capitalising on increased awareness nationally.
They will be in the pop-up shop in Bury Street today between 10am and 4.30pm offering advice on the practical steps people can take.
