DEVELOPERS could soon be made to contribute money towards more aspects of community life.

Oxford City Council has launched a consultation on potential changes to the scope of what can be asked for from developers as a Community Infrastructure Levy.

Cherwell District Council has recently consulted on their CIL changes and has proposed developers contribute to policing in new housing estates.

The city could launch its consultation on Tuesday and called on residents' groups, developers, Oxfordshire County Council, and infrastructure providers to help gauge what projects or types of community infrastructure should be funded.

Thames Valley Police's fears over how it would enforce the law in new housing developments - with 100,000 new homes planned in the county by 2031 - led Cherwell to allow developers to be forced to pay for police vehicles, radio and IT equipment and the costs of setting up premises.

Oxford City Council currently has a list of projects CIL money can be use for including, the Oxford Station redevelopment, Seacourt Park and Ride expansion, a pedestrian and cycling bridge at Oxpens and extensions to primary schools.

The council's city executive board is expected to approve the consultation launch on Tuesday.
