A COUNCIL tax hike could mean a typical Oxfordshire household shells out £80 extra on services next year.

Sajid Javid, the Local Government secretary, told councils they will be able to increase council tax by an extra per cent above the previously allowed level.

Oxfordshire County Council can already increase council tax by five per cent. This includes a two per cent rise on the existing rate and three percent to cover social care.

The change means the total increase for the county council could be six percent up on the current level.

Paul Smith, Oxfordshire County Council spokesman, said no decision has yet been taken on the potential hike.

The council thought it would be able to charge an extra £67.14 for a typical Band D property on its current tax of £1.345.59 by increasing council tax by 4.99 per cent.

If the full increase was taken up, Band D properties would cost £1.426.19 in 2018/19. .

Should the council decide to increase council tax by six per cent in 2018 and the permitted level of three per cent the following year then the county council has said it would collect an extra £7.6m to fund services and improve roads.
