OXFORDSHIRE landowners can apply for money to boost woodlands up to 25 miles from the route of the imminent High Speed 2 rail line.

A funding pot of £5m will eventually be invested through parts of north Oxfordshire, Greater London, Hertfordshire, Buckinghamshire, Northamptonshire, Warwickshire and the West Midlands through the HS2 Woodland Fund.

But first £1m will be managed by the Forestry Commission on behalf of HS2 Ltd. It wants landowners who are included 25 miles from the new train line to create sustainable woodland.

Transport minister Paul Maynard said: “HS2 is more environmentally responsible than any other major infrastructure project in UK history and this fund will mean more trees can be planted and wildlife habitats created, leaving a lasting legacy which will benefit future generations for many years to come."

Applications open in January. For more information visit www.forestry.gov.uk/england-hs2
