A NEW Assistant Priest has been appointed at Oxford’s University Church of St Mary the Virgin.

The High Street church has appointed the Rev James Crockford and he will take up his appointment from September 1.

Rev Crockford originally read Music at the University of Nottingham.

He trained for the ministry at Ridley Hall, Cambridge, and read Theology at Trinity Hall where he also completed an MPhil before ordination.

A saxophonist, he has played in a number of big bands and jazz ensembles as well as solo recital projects.

The reverend has published a number of articles on the relationship between performing music and the life of faith. Ordained in 2014 in the Diocese of Rochester, he has served as the Assistant Curate of St Paulinus in Crayford, South London.

He enjoys running, hiking and daily walks with his beagle Benny.

Rev Crockford said: “I look forward greatly to joining the community at the University Church, and serving in such a diverse and engaging ministry in the heart of Oxford.”

The Rev Dr William Lamb, the Vicar of the University Church, said: “I am delighted that James has accepted the call to be the Assistant Priest at St Mary’s.

“I have no doubt that James will make a significant contribution to the life of our community.”
