A SPECIAL event to support wild tiger conservation across the world is being held at a central Oxford restaurant tomorrow.

Global charity initiative Save Wild Tigers, which was set up in 2010 by South Oxfordshire resident Simon Clinton, is holding an all-day fundraiser on Friday to coincide with World Tiger Day at the new Banana Tree restaurant in George Street.

Anyone interested in supporting the initiative should head to the Indochinese eatery and purchase a bottle of Tiger Beer, all proceeds of which will go to world tiger conservation and demand reduction programmes.

Save Wild Tigers has worked with more than 65 international artists, as well as celebrities including Joanna Lumley, Jimmy Choo and Gok Wan, to raise awareness of the cause. Just under 3,900 tigers remain in the wild today.

The charity also helped set up the Satpuda programme, a conservation initiative in India, alongside members of the Zoology Department at Oxford University.

Mr Clinton said: “Although our work is on an international level it’s important to remember that some of our significant activities are actually here in Oxford.

"Researching and discovering ways to beat the illegal trading of wild tiger parts is critical to the future of the species.

"The work taking place in Oxford is the basis for our ongoing success.”
