RESIDENTS, groups, schools and businesses can now book their free visit to an historic signal box before its demolition later this year.

Banbury North Signal Box will be open for 10 weeks for guided tours demonstrating how signal boxes work, teaching railway safety and the dangers of railway trespass.

The box will be torn down on October 8 by Network Rail as part of £76m upgrades to the network.

The tours are being organised by campaigners who had fought since January to save the box from demolition.

They are also inviting other uses of the box including monthly meetings for groups, corporate evenings for businesses or as a venue for birthday parties.

Last month the group were told they would have to raise more than £160,000 to pay to keep the box, but despite setting up an online fundraising campaign they have not managed to raise enough money in time.

The box, which was built in 1901, is scheduled to be taken down when the area's signalling system is upgraded and moved from the town to the West Midlands.

The south signal box is due to be demolished on July 30.
