TWO trees on Osney Island in Oxford were cut down yesterday despite earlier protests from residents who wanted to save them.
Oxford City Council said the pair of rowans in South Street were diseased and posed a potential safety risk.
But Phillip Bradley, of West Street, and other residents feared that the trees were being sacrficed to make way for solar panels in council homes behind them.
At a meeting with residents last week, council officers warned the trees were in danger of falling down. But they pledged to replace them in the winter.
