Protester halts Jericho tree pollarding

A ONE-MAN protest temporarily halted work to cut back trees at a patch of woodland in Oxford.

Mike Hamblett, 57, scaled a willow tree at Cripley Meadow Allotments, next to Port Meadow, at lunchtime today as city council workers tackled about 20 trees.

The allotment association said the work was long-overdue maintenance that mainly involved pollarding – a form of pruning to generate fresh growth – and removing a small number of trees.

The association hopes to turn the land into a community orchard.

But Mr Hamblett, who was arrested in 2007 for stopping contractors painting new parking lines in his street, said the work was not necessary and the site should be left untouched.

He said: “It is not fair and not right. It’s a haven for wildlife and they have gone too far.”

Speaking before he climbed a willow, he said: “I’ve tried every avenue to contact the council but cannot get hold of a single officer.

“I have been begging the council workers to leave them alone.”

Allotment association chairman Wendy Skinner-Smith said: “This is a joint operation between us and the park department which is in the long-term interest of wildlife.

“It is pollarding and coppicing which will actually introduce far more wildlife than before.

“Willows destroy the bank when they fall and we are now putting in place proper measures to look after these trees better than before. We hope this man’s actions won’t stop what is proper tree work.

“The only trees that will be removed are ones which are damaged or unsuitable for the situation. We will end up with a much better place than before.”

Lord Mayor Susanna Pressel, Jericho and Osney ward councillor, who supported Osney islanders in their tree fight, backed the work of the allotment association.

Just keep on working. They're only putting themselves at risk.

Mr Hamblett. You'd better get all your tree hugging fogies together and get on a bus to Swindon. Oxford University will soon be clearing a 15 Acre site to accommodate the Bodleian books. Or are Swindon trees lessor living things than Oxford trees?

Speaking from personal experience of watching the machine trigger happy council - 'pollarding' is somehat being exploited by actual felling and removal of most trees around the city - believe me you the council in their 'wisdom' have really cut down so many trees because of 'heath&safety' - they have left river banks absolutely bare which once housed trees - call that pollarding - mm, being left with just stumps in the ground is a bit OTT! Well done Mr Hamblett for taking action in something you beleive in - however lets hope this time the allotment and council do create a better space for wildlife - but trees remember people are lungs of this earth and without them this city will be even more concrete, pollution and empty. So many people from the council to garden owners have taken trees down this year - it breaks a whole food chain for the wildlife, and leaves streets looking sombre and urbanised.

What a total pillock !!
As for Foxy Lady's comment, "being left with just stumps in the ground" is what pollarding is all about. From those stumps new shoots emerge.

Hi fatboy - when I mean stumps I mean flat - completely gone - nothing left to pollard. As a horticulture expert I know a thing or two about pollarding, I probably did not explain it well in that sentence. What i mean is they have taken the whole trees out - pollarding is needed i agree to lots of trees around here but not total destruction like the willow trees that are no more at Osney! Was that pollarding too fatboy? And dont call the man a pillock, I admire people who get off their fat butts and do something.

In this instance, I am informed that the 'council workers' employed to remove the trees consisted of tree surgeons who were not just hacking away at the trees, unnecessarily.
If this silly individual was to have asked instead of causing mayhem I'm sure they would have explained what they were doing.
However, the 'public' always know better - until, of course, a dead/diseased tree falls on someone, then same public would be suing the council for allowing it to happen. Whilst it is great to stand up for what you believe, if your beliefs are ill-informed and fundamentally incorrect, then it is a futile act and a waste of everybodys' time and taxpayers' money.
p.s. I don't work for the council nor am I a tree surgeon! I am just tired of foolish individuals with a tiny bit of information and too much self-importance!

Hi Fatboy, As an Arboricultural expert i know a thing or two about pollarding, And your correct and even if willows were taken right down or coppiced they will still continue to grow. Willow trees that have been managed like this for centuries in this country will always out last Willow trees that have been left unattended, which will eventually provide greater habitat for wildlife. I admire people who get off their fat butts especially those who go to work every day and pat their taxes.
