Police caught 77 motorists driving illegally during road checks today.

Officers detected 50 speeding motorists in Eynsham Road, Botley, between 8am and 10.30am.

They issued £60 fines and three penalty points to 31 drivers caught above 39mph in a 30mph zone. One driver was clocked at 49mph.

Nineteen people caught between 35mph and 39mph were given advice on cutting speed. A further 25 motorists were caught without seatbelts and five were fined for driving while using mobile phones.

Three drivers were caught both speeding and on their mobile phone.

PC Mark Pilling, Road Safety Officer for Oxfordshire, said: "The check was carried out in response to local residents concerns about road safety and it is disappointing that so many drivers were caught breaking the law in this short space of time.

"Operation Pride is a mixture of education and enforcement and I hope those who received education today, rather than a fine, will take on board the fact that speeding, using a mobile phone or not wearing a seatbelt is illegal for a reason."
