OXFORD Town Hall was a popular venue for dancing.

People would flock there in the evenings to dance to an orchestra or band.

And it was also well used by schoolchildren, as the picture above shows.

It was taken in 1962 when 400 children took part in a folk dance party for juniors.

Judging by the look of concentration on their faces, it seems they enjoyed the occasion, even if it was a little crowded on the dance floor.

The children took part in a series of country dances - and even persuaded the mayor and mayoress of Oxford, Alderman and Mrs Lionel Harrison, to join in.

Apart from the children’s performances, there was a display of morris dancing by three local ‘sides’ – Oxford City, Headington Quarry and Oxford University Morris Men.

About 300 people from Oxford and the surrounding area watched from the perimeter and the balcony.

The party was an annual event, organised by the Oxford district of the English Folk Dance and Song Society.

The master of ceremonies was Ron Smedley, who was to be the producer of the following year’s Folk Dance Festival at the Royal Albert Hall.

Among the guests was Stephen Pratt, who had recently been appointed the society’s administrator.

He was formerly organiser of Young Farmers’ Clubs in Oxfordshire and Berkshire.

Can we name any of the children in the picture?
