PARENTS went back to school in Oxford in July 1975 and children turned teachers.

It was the third time Headington Junior School had turned its classroom over to the parents to allow them to keep up with their children and join in part of the school course.

Headteacher Bill Camping said parents had been invited to an arts and crafts evening – spinning, knitting, doing batik and macramé work, making candles or pots – anything, in fact which their children were learning at the school.

He said: "We were very nervous the first time we did this, when we had a maths evening, but parents seemed to enjoy it because they could see what their children do."

There was doubt over the future of the events as the school would become Windmill First School the following year.

Ken Brown, secretary of the Parents Teachers Association, hoped the open evenings carried on, saying: "I like to know what the children are doing and they know I take an interest."
